How to Tell if the Art Program You Are Using is No Good

With the rise of digital art and digital media in general, art based programs have become a really important part of any budding artists possessions. There are plenty of different art programs to choose from, some of them extremely expensive and only available to the people who have the money to spend on something like that, and some of them completely free and not always in the best of conditions. Those are the kinds that you can never be quite sure if you are dealing with a dud program or you yourself are just having a hard time understanding what you should be doing with it. That is why we have compiled some tips to help you figure out if the art program you are using is no good.

Lacking Layers

The most important thing that any art program needs is the ability to work with layers. The majority of programs have this option and it is the greatest tool that any digital artist can use. That is why, if you find yourself using a program that does not have the ability to let you work with layers, you should definitely drop that program and find a different one to use. Now, it could just be that you are having a hard time finding the options that will let you create different layers, but that is not any better than the program not having layers at all. If the art program you are using is making it difficult for you to use layers, then it is a bad art program that you should not be using.

Not Too Many Brush Options

Being able to choose between different brushes to use and even being able to customize the size and consistency of the brush you are using are both very important things that your art program absolutely must have. Without these options, you will find yourself in a very bad spot where you will be unable to actually create the works of art that you are trying for. Your art program should be as versatile as you are yourself, so if you are working with a program that has barely any options for brushes, you need to move on and find something else to use. Otherwise you might wind up producing pieces of art that you are nowhere near proud of.

Minimal Color Choices

Colors are another thing that is extremely important to any artist. You need to be able to pick the colors that you are going to be working with and you need to be able to have any color in the entire spectrum available to you for use. So if you are looking through your art program and realizing that there are barely any color options and you can not use things like the hex codes for colors to get more color on there, then you are working with a program that is just not worth your time. There are other programs out there that will allow you to use literally any color you want and those are the programs that you should be working with.

Difficult to Use

This should go without saying, but if any art program you are using is just really hard for you to figure out, no matter how hard you try, then you should really look into getting something that is a lot simpler. While having something complicated might mean that you will have more options and the ability to do more with your artwork, being unsure about how to use your art program is a sure sign that you are in way over your head and you are just going to wind up hating working with your digital art. Stick to the things that you know and then try to move up from there eventually.

Just Plain Bad

Honestly, some art programs are just plain bad. They might have tons of glitches that make them difficult to work with or they may have a fatal saving error that frequently loses the piece of art that you were working on. Whatever the case, if you find yourself with a program that is just plain awful, let it go and move on to something else.
