If you have anxiety then you know that an attack can strike you anywhere. They can occur in the car, at school, or while you’re shopping for groceries. Anxiety attacks are ruthless and inconvenient; they don’t care if you’re in the middle of the project or a freeway. The goal, as someone with anxiety, is to be able to either work through the excruciating and debilitating moments or to be able to have quick fixes and soothers so you can make it through the day safely and calmly. Try these simple solutions that you can keep in a purse, pocket, or wallet and see if they work for you.
Bags of Spices and Herbs
Herbs and spices can be used in aromatherapy sessions and can illicit soothing sensations both spiritually and mentally. While they don’t work for everyone, using a handful of sage to keep in a bag in your car or purse can be a great and quick way to calm down. Simply take out the plastic bag or cloth pouch, inhale the spices deeply, and try to count backwards from 50. Using the scent to calm your mind and the counting to retain focus can quell an anxiety attack or keep you calm for the moment.
Things You Enjoy
One way that someone can try to come out of an anxiety attack or try to stop one is focusing their energy on something that they love. This can be bird watching, mountain climbing, or even watching television. Since you can’t always take something like this with you just take the next best thing. In the instance of bird watching, stash some bird postcards in your purse or a birding guide. A picture from your last mountain climbing trip can work wonders if you’re having a particularly stressful day.
Anything with a Calming Scent
Sometimes herbs and spices don’t work. Maybe you have another favorite scent, though, and that can work the wonders that those spices won’t. Instead of carrying around oregano or crushed up flower petals you can substitute these things for other scents, even if it’s something as silly as chicken wing sauce. Take a handkerchief or small cloth panel and soak it with a scent of your choice. Clean it as best you can while still retaining the scent and keep it in a plastic bag so it doesn’t infect your other items.
Words of Encouragement
Another anxiety solution can be as simple as reassurance. When you’re feeling down and anxious and like the world is caving in one of the best ways to drag yourself out of the slump is for someone to tell you it’ll be okay or how great you are. Instead of constantly carrying around a friend to rub your back you can instead keep little notes inside your wallet or bag to extract and focus on, reminding yourself that there is a world on the other side of your anxiety.
Something to Squeeze
Stress and anxiety can sometimes be taken care of by utilizing a physical manifestation. Keep a stress ball with you or something else that you can squeeze in pumps. Count to a high number or focus on reciting the alphabet or a song you really love. You might be surprised by how quickly your anxiety can just melt away and you can get on with your life.
